Director Bio
His drumming programs build community, encourage creativity, release stress, build teamwork, enhance wellness, fight depression, improve communications, and allow participants of all abilities to have fun in the process. As the founder and director of Sound Directions, and its affiliate group, Drum-N-Dance, both based in Westport, CT, Randy has been facilitating community drum circles, workshops and wellness programs since 1991. His diverse background includes training with Dr. Barry Bittman, MD, CEO and Medical Director of the Mind-Body Wellness Center in Meadville, PA, and Christine Stevens, MSW, MT-BC, resulting in his completion of the Remo, Inc. sponsored HealthRhythms® facilitator training program. Randy has also completed a workshop with psychotherapist Robert Friedman, author of The Healing Power of the Drum, and has subsequently facilitated programs with Mr. Friedman on several occasions. Randy plays Latin, African, Middle Eastern and Native American drums and percussion, and has studied hand drumming with a host of renowned award-winning drummers including Babatunde Olatunji, Glen Velez, Layne Redmond and Arthur Hull. He studied music improvisation with Grammy winner David Darling, is a graduate of the Unity With a Beat facilitator training program, and is a certified Music for People facilitator. As the organizer of the Drums Around the World celebration in Norwalk, CT, he unites hundreds of ethnically diverse drummers and dancers every August to help make a statement for world peace and unity.
